The Citadel is greatly informed by Cronin's time as a doctor, and a number of situations in the book are taken directly from his own experiences. The main reason for the book's success was its sharp criticism of the weakness of the British medical profession. Andrew Manson feels helplessly confused when he has to deal with real patients for the first time. Much of the illness that he is expected to cure is, in fact, caused by the poor living and working conditions of his patients. It is only a part of the story. If you read that novel, you will understand very well about sick people need the best health care in every condition.
