The Beach
The Beach, published in 1996, was Alex Garland's first novel, and in 1997 won a prize for a first novel by an author under the age of thirty-five. It was made into a film in 2000, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Richard. As told, Richard, a young backpacker from England, arrives in Thailand looking for adventure. By chance, Richard meets two French travellers, Etienne and Francoise. The three of them set off on a journey to find this perfect beach and the small community of travelers who live on it. A series of tragic events, some of them caused by Richard's own actions, soon turns paradise into hell...
